I received one of the Merchant Circle automated calls in my voicemail box this morning.
It said "Hello, this is the Merchant Circle Verification Department. We are calling regarding a customer who found your Merchant Circle Page on Google. On Monday, May 12, 2008, this customer asked us to verify that you are indeed a legitimate business. To verify your business, go to Merchant Circle.com and enter your business telephone number in the blue box. Again, that's Merchant Circle.com. Thank you."
We do not have a Merchant Circle Page and do not intend to have one.

$25 per month. That's great. I'll put my website: www.dynamicleather.com ~ Leather Motorcycle Jackets, Leather Chaps, Leather Vests in Kudzu.

I think, it will help a lot of people save money on internet advertisment

Small Town is Small Fry... dead fry.
The problem with this plan is it doesn't scale. To make a sales call and collect $50 doesn't work. Not enough revenue. COS to high. Where is the muliplier? Where is the viral? These small businesses will have to be resold each year... one at a time. Try getting them on the phone. Forget it. Too many companies have tried to enter this small town directory business - doesn't make sense.

And again... I just got one of these calls. Googled the company and found several PAGES of complaints about their tactics. I'm not about to go to their site and give them traffic, especially when I know our company has never signed up for something like this - the bosses are all too clueless to have figured this out without my help, and I'd never heard of them before today.

It is a shame to see Chris, Ron, and Jim depart the paper. They should be very proud of their remarkable accomplishments and take the lessons learned to their next greater opportunity.

Sometimes, companies feel that they need to change, and those of us on the outside cannot understand the daily interactions.

The SD Trib is better for having been an innovator, and these thought leaders will bring tremendous value to their next turn at the wheel.

Bravo to both the paper and these gents for doing what they did.

I've long admired their progressive activities.

My point was that few consumers are going to visit the white-labeled pages since a) they don't think of a newspaper as a source for general health information, so regular site users will not provide any significant traffic b) it's tough to imagine that this content will rank very highly on search engines.

Perhaps with the buildout of more local content, progress could be made on both of these challenges. However, I think in order to built up any search engine ranking, you'll have to change the domain structure of the sites from being subdomains of the taumed.com domain to being subdomains of each newspaper property's site (e.g. http://health.connpost.com). This will take advantage of the local authority of those site domains, and also potentially mitigate duplicate content issues (current connpost site doesn't appear to be indexing very well; it may be early yet, but do a search for "site:connpost.taumed.com" on Google...)

Hi Mike, Thank you for the comment. By search driven we do not mean a search box. We mean that the personalization is powered using search algorithms. We power all widgets and personalization using search algorithms. This approach allows users to be connected with related information from all of the sources and content types regarding of what they are viewing on the site.
