Thanks Peter. Bill really captured the spirit of Front Porch Forum in his article for Yankee Magazine.

We also just learned that two dozen Vermont state legislators are co-sponsoring a resolution (HRC235) to honor the local community building occurring through FPF... http://bit.ly/bRa9HM

There are two questions that I would enjoy seeing answered:

1. If journalists and reporters are truly "in the know" then why did they not see the huge impact of the migration toward "on demand" information (online) and prepare themselves accordingly? This principally means evolving from print to internet based news distribution. They obviously are not as smart as they perceive themselves.

2. Knowing that "content is king" why are journalists and reporters incapable of grasping that the majority of Americans who take an interest in "real news" such as politics, are not going to spend money on "news" that is blatantly biased, typically liberal to socialist, and certainly NOT what the public believes or wants? Is it because the mainstream media has abandoned its roots to report facts and has morphed into a propoganda machine for the left? Taking on a self appointed role to "guide society" was a huge mistake.

In summary, the mainstream media is NOT providing what We The People want in either content or manner of availability. It all really illustrates how the mainstream media is out of touch with life and has totally misguided principles - business and moral.

Comment on iPad’s Impact on Newspapers: Too Little, Too Late? by Mike

I think you're right, Peter. After all, it still comes down to content. iPad is basically a presentation layer, so if the underlying content is not compelling, then it's a nonstarter. Also, even with good content, there is a lot of design work involved in making the iPad version of the content compelling and user friendly.

And you are right on in referring to niche content. That's where the opportunity is, but newspapers are basically broadcast engines, so there's a structural challenge for them to identify and develop these content niches... just not in their DNA.

Many companies, like ReachLocal, manage Pay-Per-Click (PPC) campaigns and are now 'branching out' to add other ancillary services (ie: digital display advertising, etc...). Rumor has it that they now offer SEO services, but I have not been able to confirm it.
A fast, easy way to show they're marketing a business is by placing your advertising in the PPC areas. However, most 'clicks' (70-85%) come from the organic (free) section of search engines.
Business owners: yes, ReachLocal can be a profitable tool. However, I've decided to put my money in SEO - where the majority of my clicks (and business) come from. SEO takes some time, but it's TOTALLY worth it in the long run.

Your comment has truth but maybe misses an important issue with Adwords. It has been well documented that Google typically drives advertisers back up the geo-graphical funnel to the city level where there is more competition. That way they can get higher values for their ads. As a result, there is a limited number of "hyper local" ads, where hyper local is more granular than the city level.
