Howard Owens on Why Local Remains Vitally Important

Gatehouse’s Howard Owens , in a must-read post, defends the future of local services online, noting that the Internet is now key to building real world communities, not a barrier.

I think back to the creation of GeoCities, when founder David Bohnett said his creation of personal home pages was a liberator for many people with alternative lifestyles and interests that were inhibited by their homogeneous neighbors and neighborhoods. That was (and is) true, and the Web’s contribution has been enormous. But now we’ve come full circle, to fully value the glue to our daily lives that local services potentially provide.
